Summary

Summary

In this fascinating work, associate professor of American studies at the University of Minnesota and Red Lake Ojibwe Nation member Brenda J. Child spotlights the remarkable women of the Ojibwe Nation. A stunning look at a too-seldomly explored subject in history, Holding Our World Together shows how American Indian women have profoundly influenced Native American life-from the days of the European fur trade to the present, in activism, community, and beyond.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Meticulous…As Child makes wonderfully clear in this important and inspirational narrative, it’s been a long struggle for Ojibwe women, and that struggle continues unabated.” Minneapolis Star Tribune
“Child sheds light on the role of women as linchpins of the Ojibwe world: forging kinship ties and strategic alliances; maintaining medicinal knowledge; organizing the seasonal harvests; participating in civil rights groups like the American Indian Movement; and bolstering community values as social activist leaders…A sensitive portrait of a resilient group and the struggles it has overcome.” Publishers Weekly
“Child offers a penetrating look into how crucial Ojibwe women have been over the last two centuries in holding the Ojibwe National together against forces threatening to tear it apart.” Booklist
“The author has an intimate connection to her subject…A fascinating account of a resilient culture that has survived despite oppression.” Kirkus Reviews
