Summary
William, Elizabeth, and their four sons Fritz, Ernest, Jack, and Franz are on a large ship when a terrible storm strikes. The ship's crew gets to safety on lifeboats leaving behind the Swiss family. The family now stranded on the partially destroyed ship finds a small island. They pack up what materials are left on the boat, which includes guns and ammunition, livestock, some provisions, and even pieces of the ship. Author Bio: Johann David Wyss
Johann David Wyss (1743–1818) was a clergyman in Berne, Switzerland. He spoke four languages, loved nature, and was closely involved in the raising of his four boys. To teach them moral lessons and to entertain them, he wrote and read to them The Swiss Family Robinson. His son Johann Emmanuel illustrated it, and years later, another son, Johann Rudolf, edited and had the manuscript published.
