Cambridge, 1896. When gifted mathematician Grace Marshall is thrown into poverty by the sudden loss of her distinguished father, marriage seems to offer the best hope of security. The obvious candidate agrees; their union would boost his professional reputation as well as offering Grace safe respectability. But Grace’s ally at the college, Miss Froment, has taken against this suitor and recruits the Moth Agency in a campaign of engagement prevention.

Enter Daniel Hollingdale, a musician widely condemned as a hothead whose prank theft of a precious statue has led to disgrace and punishment. His future career under threat, Daniel needs to persuade the college and his family that he is now capable of serious study. Grace is the only tutor who can help him. Grace, however, has already embarked on her own unlikely career as a fashion journalist. Learning the modern skill of typewriting, she quickly stumbles across corruption in the running of a nearby workhouse, and soon becomes involved in the fate of three abandoned children.
