Summary

Summary

Blending the deadpan satire of Interior Chinatown with the emotional chaos of The Nest, A Rising of the Lights offers a voice-rich exploration of modern masculinity, caregiving, and AI-era absurdity.

Russell Wilson, recently out of a job and an unhappy marriage, is adjusting to aimlessness—until the Overcrowding and Relief Act of 2026 forces his difficult parents out of a care facility into his unstable home. Struggling to support them, Russell feels increasingly trapped by obligation, memory, and his own inertia. As his past resurfaces, so too does the Secret Alibi Club: a decades-old pact between Russell and his friends, forged after a long-buried transgression.

Russell may have found a way out, though, when his parents and a bizarre neighbor enroll him in a nefarious scheme to defraud a tech investor—by pretending they’ve built a conscious AI named SHELLEY. Russell’s role is to be SHELLEY, a synthetic form of consciousness that both parodies and critiques our AI-obsessed world, and he plunges into a near-constant performance guided both by the neighbor and various mind-altering chemicals.

As the Secret Alibi Club start to threaten his fragile existence, and his parents reveal their chilling plan for joint suicide, Russell finds himself at a crossroads. He must confront the weight of generational trauma and destroyed friendships and choose whether to step into a new future grounded in care—or follow the AI rabbit hole towards the ultimate escape.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“A wildly imaginative, deeply hilarious, and surprisingly tender story of the paths life takes when you don’t take a life path. Morbid, insane, brilliant, and packed with the kind of darkly funny philosophical insights that make sense of an increasingly terrifying, tech-dominated world. Spending time with this narrator is a thousand times more fun than AI.” Lexi Freiman, author of The Book of Ayn
