Leaving suburban Long Island, Meg and her teenage daughter, Sally, embark on a new life in Arcadia Falls, a beautiful but isolated small town and the inspiration for a number of magically eerie fairy tales. With a hurtful rift growing between her and her daughter, Meg is hopeful that the change of scene will provide them with a fresh start. But it soon becomes clear to Meg that this isolated community hides deeply rooted and deadly secrets. And after a mysterious death, Arcadia Falls begins to reveal a disturbing dark side.

“Buried secrets, supernatural elements, and a creepy setting…[Goodman’s] storytelling is as solid as ever.” Publishers Weekly
“Readers will enjoy Goodman’s clear prose and well-drawn characters in this moving story of mothers and daughters and the hard choices women must make…Goodman combines gripping suspense with strong characters and artistic themes.” Library Journal
“Goodman explores the status of women, notably their ability to have both family and artistic career, but her primary focus is on fairy tales, folklore, and myth…this is a wonderfully atmospheric literary mystery.” Booklist
“Goodman’s forte is building suspense and keeping the story moving. This novel delivers all of that plus engaging characters and a really lovely, spooky setting.” Globe and Mail (Toronto)
“Goodman’s finely written book is rich in language and imagery. Her characters are fully fleshed out, with strong psychological underpinnings. Fairy-tale and folklore expert Meg Rosenthal’s daughter, in particular, is realistic in her surly unhappiness. Goodman's beautiful writing makes this a book to savor.” RT Book Reviews
“True to form, Carol Goodman is a master of imagery and setting. Her characters are so real that readers can almost touch them. Her knowledge of fairy tales, myth, folklore and arcane rituals is quite formidable, bringing verisimilitude to her tales.” BookReporter.com
