Summary

Summary

From the church's birth to the reign of St. Gregory the great, to the Great Schism and through the Reformation, Phyllis Tickle notes that every 500 years the church has been rocked by massive transitions. Remarkably enough, Tickle suggests to us that we live in such a time right now. The Great Emergence Examines history, social upheaval, and current events, showing how a new form of Christianity is rising within postmodern culture. Anyone interested in the future of the church in America, no matter what their personal affiliation, will find this book a fascinating exploration.

Editorial Reviews

“With an elegance of argument and economy of description, Tickle escorts readers through the centuries of church history leading to this moment and persuasively charts the character of and possibilities for the emerging church…Packed with keen insights…a must-read.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Pam Ward’s deft reading style enhances Phyllis Tickle’s discussion of current changes in fundamental Christianity…Ward seamlessly delivers the author’s rationale for this transformative change, which she believes is as radical and far-reaching as the Reformation. In a lighter vein, she uses subtle humor to deliver…Tickle’s keen insights and complex ideas with authenticity, simplicity, and clarity.” AudioFile
“Long an astute observer of religion, Tickle examines a phenomenon she refers to as the Great Emergence…in a seamless fabric that, at fewer than two hundred pages, is small but full of big ideas, a remarkable achievement of synthesis and thoughtful reflections.” Booklist (starred review)
