Summary

Summary

New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman brings the untamed splendor and rugged individualism of the Southwest to life with his absorbing mysteries. In this evocative tale, a puzzling death revives interest in a murder case gone cold, a long-time missing person, and a legendary gold mine.

Officer Bernie Manuelito has already trampled the crime scene when she discovers the man curled up in the truck isn’t just sleeping off a hangover—he’s a murder victim. With the FBI demanding an explanation, Bernie’s boss, Sergeant Jim Chee, calls on retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn for help. As the three Tribal Police officers search for the killer, they run up against rumors of a ghostly wailing woman, an obsessive lover, and a determined swindler.
