He distinguishes between a trusting faith in Christ and a commitment to “the principles of Jesus.” “It is one thing to hold that the ethical principles which Jesus enunciated will solve the problems of society, and quite another thing to come into that intimate, present relation to Him which we call faith…” Continuing themes earlier explored in his book Christianity and Liberalism, Machen argues that theological modernism “reads salvation out of Christianity” by laying aside concerns of guilt and Hell, and by not respecting the majesty and justice of God. Written as course material for a series of lectures at Grove City Bible School, What is Faith? was first published in 1925 and has been republished in several editions since. Author Bio: J. Gresham Machen
J. Gresham Machen (1881–1937) taught the New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1906 to 1929, when he founded Westminster Theological Seminary. He was a professor of the New Testament at Westminster until his death.
